v-a-c-a-tion

I tossed the damp towel on the edge of the bathtub.  A couple of hours later, it was still there.

Must only mean one thing………vacation is over.  Here at home, there are no efficient maids that work behind the scenes. (to be clear, this is a picture of the hotel bathroom, not the master bath in our home )venetian-bath

This year to celebrate 35 years of being married, we chose to do something completely different.  Certainly, different for us.  In a surprising twist, two folks who don’t drink, smoke or gamble decided to go to Las Vegas, Nevada!

venetian-resort-armillary_2400x1600To spend time, in a glamorous suite, at the Venetian exploring a whole new world was most certainly different and quite an adventure.

8949It was a week of art, beauty, gardens, waterfalls, food, glorious food, treats and sunshine!  We are so used to pouring rain and gray, it took a day or so for us to dry out and revel in the glorious rays of the sun.

Daily breakfast at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon restaurant had VACATION written all over it. Seriously folks.  I want live in that restaurant.  I want that floor.  The service was 8958extraordinary. The food was exemplary.  If you order the French Toast it is little pillows of heaven served on the most exquisite marmalade you have ever had the pleasure of tasting. The coffee is perfect. Oh, and then as you are just about to leave……….wait for it………they bring you a “to-go” cup of coffee, already with the perfect amount of cream to take with you, to help you ease into the day.  BLESS THEM and what they have created.  Such extravagance.

The gondola ride was anniversary perfect.  The music, the gondolier, the roses, the water, the perfect (faux) sky…… charming, every moment of it was charming and fun (I mean 8945romantic).

Having my palm read has been a secret desire.  I don’t know why I have never been brave enough.  Vacation has a way of making you brave enough to try new things.  I did it and it was super fun & silly & wonderful all mixed together.  After she was done, I told her she was spot on and accurate about everything.  (I wanted her to know she did a good job.)  She said,  “I know, it’s my job.”   Really?  How did she know I study one hour each morning?  ummmm….

A daily treat of swimming and lounging by the garden pool, was so nice.  Just hearing the waterfall and lollygagging for hours was dreamy.

We visited some beautiful gardens and wondered around until we found a glorious bakery.  See?  Vacation is DREAMY!!

Vacations allow us glorious time, somehow remind us we have permission to slowly walk through a garden and fill our spirits with saturated color and beauty. We walk slower, we take more time to gather goodness.

This Monday morning, our vacation envelope is empty.

Time to start saving and dreaming about our next adventure. I’ll wait for you to go get an envelope and pen.  Saving and anticipating the next glorious adventure is wonderful. Write on the outside of the envelope where you want to go.  Put a dollar in the envelope. Seriously, one dollar.  Seed money.8956

Vacation fills our pitcher.  We owe it to ourselves to dream and anticipate and plan.  Then once on vacation, the sun feels warmer, the coffee is richer,  the pool more relaxing, the desserts are more decadent (I forgot to tell you all about the glorious, thick, creamy dreamy Tiramisu dessert that we had made right at our table……..ah……)  oh, and did I mention the shared tangy, Lemon Gelato? 8947

Taking the time to plan a 35th  anniversary vacation, reminds us to celebrate what a really good marriage we have. Yes, my friend, celebrating marriage is THAT important.  By making an effort to celebrate anniversary 4 or 17, those celebrations most certainly help you get to number 35.  By celebrating number 35 it helps you get to number 47 and so on……

Here’s to great marriages, amazing experiences and wonderful breakfasts in French restaurants!

54 wishes

wish

Of course you can’t tell anyone what you wish for, for fear it won’t come true.

During the middle of a wonderful weekend adventure, we stopped for lunch.  We chose a table near the window.  Looking at the people coming and going, counting happy dogs  added a sweet touch to our day.

Tacked to a pole, I spied this sign.

Make a Wish.

Who put that sign there?  Why?  Wacky and Wonderful for sure.  I thanked the universe for such an amazing soul.

While I won’t tell you what I wished for, I will tell you I was a bit greedy.  I made 54 wishes!!! Yes the sign read, made A wish.  Since it was my birthday, my interpretation was make 54 wishes.

The day spent on Vashon Island, swirled & twisted and gracefully unfolded into the most loveliest of days.   I made and let fly 54 wonderful wishes!!!

A day spent with Mr. Right, in the great outdoors refilling our spirits and making wishes.

Grateful, very grateful for another birthday.  Now, the trick is to fill a whole new year with Grace and Goodness. A gift given to me. I get to add the glitter and paint and make the year ahead sparkle.

Ferry ride + beach + lighthouse + balance + wild flowers + cappuccino + rocks + holding hands + sand + bookstore + lunch + making oodles of wishes = Happy Birthday adventure.

board games, good marriages, good times, grateful

game on

20150810_21081850 points is serious stuff.  Not very often do I earn those glorious extra 50 points.   You earn them by utilizing all of your tiles in the game of Scrabble during one turn.

I am sure you are familiar with the board game Scrabble?  It is a fixture in our home.  It comes out on winter days.  It is on the table during the summer.  Friends come to visit, it is on the table for morning coffee.  We share scores with family members via phone or text message.

Our family looks forward to visiting each other and bringing out the board games.

While waiting for dinner to finish cooking, we play a game.  While listening to music, you got it, we play a game.  Heck, we even have Scrabble tiles on the refrigerator door!

We purchased our game of Scrabble in 1986, while living in Alaska.

Mr. Right has been keeping written score of our games and dates since 1995.  Hard to believe, yet so true.  Here is the proof!20150810_215322-1

20150811_095031We keep score on the inside lid of most of our board games.  Boy howdy, we have a lot of board games. Scrabble, Cribbage and Kismet seem to come out most often.

It is fun to see who won last, the date we last played and if something remarkable happened that game. (high scoring word, or earning 50 points twice in one game.)

Board games are engaging.  We chat and sometimes eat snacks.  We laugh and are serious.  We look up words and yes, we keep score.

Taking the time out of an ordinary day to play a game makes the day, um, just better.

How to turn an ordinary day into a day of goodness and gratitude.  I am so grateful to have a friend to play a game of Cribbage.

During the Home schooling years, we would go, once a week to an assisted living home and the boys would play chess with a couple of residents.  Both parties were happy to have a new chess opponent.

Oh sure, you can play Cribbage on-line.  While waiting to have your oil changed or waiting your turn at the DMV, sure a computer game is a fun way to give your brain a break and waste some time. 20150811_095607

Nothin’ beats a real person, across from you.  An other human somehow, makes you bring your A game.  Oh, that win is so much sweeter when you know you tried your very best.  When you loose?  Makes you want to play again.

Get out a board game and make a memory.  Yes, it is fun.  Competition is not all bad, some times you even win!  it is a great way to let go of the day’s heaviness.  You know what I mean?  Extra long commute, bank fraud, not thriving pumpkins…… whatever the yuck.

May I gently suggest getting out the Scrabble game and playing a game after supper tonight?

Fingers crossed you win tonight.

Seriously, you don’t have a Scrabble game?  Get thyself to the local store.  Buy one.  Hours of fun times just waiting for you and your family.
