2 travel goodies

V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N….in the summer time…..  can’t get that song to stop looping in my noggin.

Vacation is exciting and different and wonderful.  However……  by the sheer fact of the exciting and different part….our  “normal” comfortable routine is mixed up patty whacked.   Today, I wanted to share two things that might make your next trip a bit easier and happier.

I found a lush creature comfort that I knew I wanted to share.  (Side note:  don’t you just slump in your chair and throw your arms up when someone says, “Oh, I’ve been using that for two years now, you didn’t know?”  Urgh.)button scarf

Right, this minute, as I type, my lush, dreamy soft, Scarf/Poncho/Wrap is rolled up and stored in my carry on satchel for use next trip.

The store that I purchased it from is called Lace & Grace.  Quick service and quite a large variety of items.

These are my own opinions & sadly, no, I was not paid to endorse my new favorite travel items.

First the details.  It is huge and yet manageable. Excellent quality, reversible with substantial buttons and rich saturated colors.   The fabric is soft, you sort of want to pet it, but that would be weird.  By the way, this company has several colors and patterns to choose from.

I have a tendency to get cold on the airplane.  Out came the scarf.  I had it rolled up inside my carry on bag, easy to get to.  button scarf, lace and graceI wore it like a poncho so it covered my shoulders and kept the chill at bay.   It looks great with jeans and a t-shirt, however, I did wear it one evening with bold jewelry and as a scarf, it looked rather fetching, if I do say so myself.

Next option,  I just buttoned only one of the buttons, turned it a couple times and wore it as a scarf through the airport as we caught our next flight.

During the driving….. Mr. Right logged 1,873 miles during this vacation…… I folded the scarf/poncho/shawl over my legs and was nice and cozy without blasting the heater.

I must say this garment construction is beautiful and the reverse color of soft gray and white herringbone complemented several outfits.

Overall, extremely pleased with this piece.

berkey water bottle

The other best travel piece is my Berkey travel Water Bottle.   http://www.getberkey.com/

It has the filter right inside.  I pack it empty in my carry on and once past airport security, I can fill it up using a water fountain or any tap water.  (Note:  It does not filter out fluoride. I keep a list of bottled waters sans fluoride and when available I purchase those. Then I pour those into my bottle. )  Travel choices are not perfect, we do what we can.

When not traveling, I store this item alongside my travel satchel and suitcases.  A quality product that works very well.  I can’t imagine traveling without one.  I highly recommend.

I hope these gentle suggestions will make your next trip ( you are planning your next adventure, right?) a bit smoother.

In this together, friends.

Just sharing the goodness.

Chat soon.

sweet sunday

Deep cleansing breath ……….Sweet Sunday afternoon bike ride included fall leaves, laughing, 2 alpacas and Mr. Right treated to an iced latte.  It was relaxing and so nice.   Why yes, my bike bell matches my helmet.  Thanks for noticing.

Sunday night supper was grilled vegetables and more.

You know?  You take  zucchini, onion, mushrooms, cauliflower, red pepper, Brussels Sprouts, rough chop &  let them bathe in marinate all afternoon.  To the line up we added a couple of ears of corn, brown rice & some vegan “bratwurst”.  Casual, delicious, late summer easy peasy meal.

Normally, I use a lady like portion of dark mustard…………

Kozlik’s Canadian Mustard

Most companies use sugar, not this one.  They use honey to sweeten it, so I can indulge.  Almost teary eyed as I type.  You probably have no idea, how many mustards are out there in mustard land that contain sugar?  It is dreadfully disappointing.

Made in Canada and they have 36 different flavors of which I am sure one will tickle your taste buds.

Whole Foods was the spot that we discovered this gem. I did look it up and sure enough, amazon.com carries this line as well.

Sweet Smokey Sunday, we  ENTHUSIASTICALLY give this product 4 thumbs up!  We both went back for seconds.

Clean plate club members.

The end.

ps. No, Kozlik’s did not pay me for this review.  However, if they want to send over the 35 other flavors, I promise, on my honor to review and write glowingly about each.

don’t worry, be happy

20140629_194333Summer has some lazy moments hidden just for you to find.

The boyfriend bought me a package of the new ink joy pens.

Paper-mate $3.77.  Get some.  Get some happy.

Doodle for no reason.

Doodle to be happy.

Need a gift to mail to a favorite niece or a favorite grandkiddo?  Do you want to make a girlfriend smile?  Pop them in a padded envelope and send some good karma out into the universe.  Buy a package for the neighbor kid.  Buy a package for your sullen teenager.  Turn off the video game and hand over some white paper and some pens.  Watch the imagination fall out of their brains and find its way onto the paper.   Skip the latte and spend the moola on a brand new package of gel pens just for you!

Buy yourself some new doodle toys.  papermate, inkjoy

Let your mind swirl.  Make some happy.

No, I was not paid to say this.

I love having ink on my fingers.  Evidence of time spent doodling.

Do something creative every single day.

Grateful my boyfriend knows what will make this girl tie her hair up and turn up the music and doodle.

Makes for a happy girlfriend.

When was the last time you spent some time doodling?  It’s good for your spirit and soul.

We all need some do nothing time.

Time well spent.

soap, quotes & bubbles of hope

I fell in love again, this morning.  Three words:  Brown Sugar Fig.

Here is another thing to add to “the” list.  You know, the list of things they don’t teach you in school?

DSCN4743Buy quality soap.  You are worth it.  (Your shower buddy is worth it.  Oops, sorry kids, you will have to wash really well to get that picture out of your mind of your parents.  haha)

Seriously, finding top quality soap with unusual and divine scents  is a thing of beauty.  Okay, it doesn’t hurt that the gal who sells it looks amazing and is so kind and funny, smart & gorgeous.  You really want to buy the soap.  Just in case there is a chance that some of her beautiful energy will rub off on you.  She is one of those good eggs, inside and out.   You feel thankful and grateful to have her in your life.  You can find her at the Puyallup Farmers Market, inside the pavilion or go on etsy.   https://www.etsy.com/people/AromaSoapLab

I am guessing you know how we feel about our soap lady, Renee?    She makes our world so much better.  Not only do her soaps look and smell amazing, they are so full of pure goodness there is not one speck of room for yucky chemicals.     Just stepping into our bathrooms, you catch a swirl of glorious scent .  In some mystical way, our regular, ordinary, white, spotless  bathroom has morphed into a spa retreat.  I look in the mirror and instead of being critical, I say hello gorgeous.  I am trying.  It is all a process.

Did I mention her newly invented scent Brown Sugar Fig?   In addition to picking up our favorite scent of Cedar Saffron…………we now have a tie for our new, best, favorite scent ever!

In a huge effort to rid ourselves and our home of all the bad plastics that cause havoc with estrogenic fueled bad cells…………………we are slowly but methodically saying adios to all the plastics in our lives.  Good bye plastic hangers, hello wooden beauties.  Goodbye plastic soap dispensers, hello pretty wooden soap trays.  Just take a peek around your home.  Besides that water bottle or baby bottles just think of all the plastics containers, zip bags and plastic wrap and receipts we touch every single day.  frightening.

You know, great soap can make you stay in the shower a bit longer than you anticipated.  Some of my best ideas are hatched in the shower.  I love to think in there.  However, sometimes, my mind isn’t swirling and twirling happily.  Sometimes, I can only roll over ugly things in my mind.  It seems like a continual loop that I can’t break.   The shower is the perfect place to let it all go and cry and sob until you are cried out.  Unless?  Unless you would rather focus on the good and be grateful for parts of your life?

Miss Florida had a light bulb moment & shared a remarkable idea.  She printed and mailed me some laminated inspirational quotes, Bible quotes and just all around good things to read.    I cut them apart and taped them up on the shower wall.

DSCN4745 I happen to have another friend who mailed me some flying pig duct tape.  It was perfect to use on the shower wall.   How can you not be happy when you look at flying pig duct tape? flying pig duct tape

So picture yourself, lathering up with Brown Sugar Fig handmade, soap of pure goodness.  While covered in lush lather, you read an inspirational quote or two.   Sort of makes you feel like you can take on the world!

Well at least the tiny corner of the world that I call my own.  I am so worth high quality hand-made soap.  Please tell me you are worth it as well?  We are in this together.  Here’s to our health and wellness.

Please don’t forget to head over to AromaSoapLabs on etsy and say hi to Miss Renee.  Your life will be more bubbly, I promise!

ps.  absolutely NO judgement on selling lotions and potions in plastic containers.  I myself, sell my dog treats in food grade plastic bags.  When I purchase a product, I just transfer it to a glass container once home.

spray my fanny

orange peel cleanerA Good Sweet smellin’ Monday Morning to y’all!   Just sharing a little housekeeping this morning.  Update on the homemade Orange cleaner.

I made the mixture and then had to wait 30 days.  Insert a long rendition of the Jeopardy thinking music……………………….  Yesterday, I poured the elixir into a spray bottle, added some filtered water and got my cleaning groove on.  The scent of vanilla, cinnamon and stunning orange was intoxicating in a FRESH,  wonderful way.  I like that it smells heavenly.  I like that it is non toxic.  Here is the best part.  Two words.  IT WORKS!  Yep, go back and read that again.  IT WORKS!  Cuts the grime and the grease and the mess.  I used it in the kitchen sink, on the counters, the window sills, I used it on the door jamb to the chicken coop.  I used it on the inside lid of the washing machine.  yuck.  It worked like a charm.  Two thumbs up, 5 gold star good.

Sunday was a snow day here in the Pacific Northwest.  Beautiful, freshly fallen snow.  When outdoors it was so pristine and quiet.  Now, granted we only got 4 inches of the beautiful white stuff.  It was fun and silly and happy.  My brother-in-law, who lives in Vermont, spent his hard-earned money on a heavy-duty snow blower. (Since they count their amounts of snow in feet, I am not sure he thinks of it as beautiful and silly and fun.)   I had Mr. Right take my picture to show him the type of  $14.95 “snow blower” we use here! haha  DSCN3485

A friend who lives about 20 minutes away, said she would take her garbage can lid and sled on over to our house.  I love that mental picture.  She is a very tidy, proper lady.  So to imagine her flying down the road, gripping onto the garbage can lid, screaming WooHOO and smiling the entire way to our home, made me belly laugh.

Speaking of cleaning and belly laughing.   When the boys were little, wearing their play clothes,  almost daily, we would scamper off to the park.  I had a tote bag I took with me. I would sit on the bench and mend or cross stitch while they played and ran and laughed and worked off little boy energy.  So of course inside my bag were scissors, thread, fabric, a can of Pledge polishing spray, the stitching pattern, some band aids, and thimble.  Wait!  A can of Pledge?????

Yes, a can of Pledge.  After roughly playing and climbing and screaming, using their outdoor voices, they would be out of breath and come running over to me.  They would turn around and bend over and say, “spray my fanny”.    I would of course oblige.  I would set down my stitching, get the can of Pledge out and generously spray their fannies.  They would scream THANKS as they high tailed it back to the play ground equipment.  Oh sure, we tried wax paper.  Yes, it worked pretty well.  However, once we figured out the magic combination, it was lightening fast and screaming fun.  Metal slide + Oklahoma sunshine + kid in play pants with their fannies sprayed with furniture polish = belly laughs galore.

Look at me figuring out different uses for hair dryers, furniture polish and left over orange peels.  I told you my mind swirled and twirled in constant motion.

Here’s to a Happy and Clean Monday full to the brim with belly laughs.  It’s good for the soul.

fresh blood, fresh HOPE

If things seem a bit jumbled up in my life, I like to find a tiny bit of calm and sparkly clean.  Okay, it may sound weird, however, people who “need” to be in control find it in the strangest of places.  The kitchen sink is where I find great calm and order.  Okay, I empty out every little thing from the sink.  I fill ‘er up with hot water and add some vinegar.  Let it soak for, the length that it takes to bike four miles (about 21 minutes).  Okay, drain the sink.  Wearing gloves, I scrub and scrub and get every nook and cranny.  I use baking soda and part of an SOS pad and get all the dirt and grime.  When you wash as many vegetables and fruits as we do, that sink takes a licking.  Then I rinse everything clean.  I spray a little more white vinegar and buff that baby (not a real baby, you don’t use an SOS pad on a baby, geesh) until she gleams.  She sparkles and shines.  Even the soap dispenser is spit spot clean and de-gunked.   For the next couple of hours, every time I walk by her, she twinkles and looks so fresh and new.

If I can do that to a kitchen sink, why can’t I do that exact “spa” treatment for my body?

I have a printed list taped  inside one of my cupboard doors.  I don’t even remember where I found it.  I found it about a year ago, it gave me HOPE.  Heck, it still gives me HOPE.  No, it is not a fancy poem, or inspirational quote or the ideal Bible verse.  It is not a list of sage advice from a great yogi.   It reads: “Every cell in your body dies and is replaced by new cells,” his doctor explained… Your body builds…

a new brain in 1 year

new blood in 4 months

an entire skeleton in 3 months

a new liver in 6 weeks

new skin in 1 month

a new stomach lining in 5 days

young coconut 3Yesterday while researching, I spent most of my study time learning about Young Coconuts from Thailand.

It takes 9 months to filter each liter of water.  The fresh coconut water has the highest source of electrolytes known to man.

I learned how to open them, (and ordered the supplies from a GREAT company with wonderful customer service,  http://www.coco-jack.com/ ) how to add them to your daily smoothies and why.

I learned that Coconut water is identical to human blood plasma.  During WWII, during extreme war-time situations, coconut water was used to help soldiers during medical emergencies.  Plasma makes up 55% of human blood.  By drinking the very sterile and fresh coconut water, we give ourselves an instant blood transfusion.  The coconut is a great blood purifier.

Once the coconut water is exposed to air, the liquid rapidly loses most of its organoleptic and nutritional characteristics, and begins to ferment.  So fresh is best. The fatty acids can enhance the body’s anti-inflammatory reactions and help build up the immune system. One person whom I studied, drinks the water of 5-6 coconuts a day.young coconut

If we can clean (purify) our blood, just by drinking some coconut water, why don’t more of us do it?   Why isn’t there a line in the produce department with everyone waiting politely to pick up their 5 or 6 coconuts for the week or day?  When you go into a grocery store, why doesn’t every single grocery cart have among other fruits and vegetables 5 or 6 Young Coconuts?  Why doesn’t every cart have 12-15 lemons?  Why aren’t we politely waiting for the person in front of us to gather their 20 oranges?  Why is the guy replacing all the chips and snacks wearing  work clothes and working, really working to refill all those chips and processes foods? He is bringing in dollies full of those things.  He is moving and bending and stacking and replenishing the shelves.  Why oh why does the produce guy have time to casually talk to each customer buying one head of iceberg lettuce or a “bag o salad” and one gassed hot-house tomato?

young coconut 2Get thy self to an Asian grocery store pronto.  Come on folks, this is a GREAT idea, that we can all easily incorporate.  Sure trying and adding in new things is difficult at first.  It can even be scary.  Instead of putting all that chemically produced white sugar, white flour, white milk, white bread, chips and frozen pizzas into our grocery carts maybe we can find room for a couple of FRESH things that will serve us well.

Change is hard.  I get it.  You are preaching to the choir.  I am trying so many new things, I forgot what it was like to feel comfortable with the daily routine.

No, not every person you know has cancer or liver disease.  Not every person you know has Lupus or Thyroid or an auto immune disease.  HOWEVER, every single person you know, has had the flu bug more than once this winter.  Every single person you know has felt tired or groggy or not “with it” this past Monday.  Every single person you know has a twisted shoulder or neck or strained a leg muscle  or bruised toe.  Almost every single person you know is flirting with diabetes and heart troubles and high blood pressure and more.

If getting the kitchen sink spiffed up and sparkly makes us feel good, why wouldn’t choosing, buying and actually eating and drinking really great things to SPIFF up the inside of our bodies make us feel great and help us on the path of health and wellness?

We need, really need to be kind to one another.  Each person is carrying so much on their shoulders.  We need to share all the good things we have found to improve and increase our health and wellness.  We are in this together folks.  Your health and wellness is reflected in your smile and good karma.  It spills over to me.  I need and want to look and act and be healthy.  I have a family & friends who need that from me.  I need to feel the health vibes from my friends.  I crave it.

Let’s each grab a fresh young coconut and toast each other?  Cheers to our good health!

“The heart of the giver makes the gift dear and precious.” -Luther

When I write a thank you note, I pause and make sure I want to use the word “thoughtful”.  Yes, I want to write a proper thank you note.  Yes, I want to send it to acknowledge that I/we appreciate the time, effort, energy, money that went into what someone has decided to give us.   I honestly try and only use the word “thoughtful” when I really, really mean it.

DSCN3181When I write the next couple of thank you notes, I am using the word thoughtful and I am underlining it. I happen to have a very smarty pants friend , who is equally beautiful, sassy and yes, very thoughtful.  She is going to school to become a doctor.  She will graduate in May.  She will then be on the next level of this journey and become an intern.  To say she is busy, doesn’t even come close to explaining her schedule.  I think it would be offensive to say to her, gee, you must be busy.

Yet, somehow in all her involved life, she bought me a pair of earrings.  Now, I will say they are the silliest, cutest, happiest dang things I ever did see.  The profits of these delightful, cheerful, sassy earrings goes to www.idahobirdrescue.com  Yes, she found a non-profit group devoted to ending the needless suffering of abandoned domestic birds through rescue, rehabilitation, placement and education of the community.  So not only used her very sharp brain to choose a darling pair of earrings that she somehow knew would make me smile, she went a step further and KNEW how happy and impressed and grateful I would for the cause she chose to support.  Yes, we will be sending a donation ourselves.  Next month, our charity envelope will have me dipping in and sharing some dollars.

That my friend is a thoughtful girl, with a very thoughtful heart.

Ever heard the saying the Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree? Apparently, she gets her saucy and sassiness from her momma.

We received, yes you guessed it, a very thoughtful gift.  I have always wanted to be a “Salsa girl” no, not the dancing kind….although that would be fun to learn and wear the dancing shoes and the outfits………………………….  no, I mean, the kind of girl who sits with others and dips their tortilla chip into some salsa and laughs and grabs another chip and digs in.  Sure I eat the chips, I laugh, you just don’t see me dipping.  The sauces are a bit to sassy for my taste buds.  I have been learning to eat more flavorful food as of late.  With taking so many things out of my eating line up, I am trying to pack what’s left with oodles of flavor.

I opened the package and was polite about the salsa.  Yes, extremely THOUGHTFUL.  She had checked the ingredient list and it was vegetarian and she knew I could have everything in the jar.  She went onMama-Nanos-Vegetarian-Sauce-Now-at-Safeway and on about how tasty it is.  She said she bought a case to share and most had already been eaten by her and her family.  I was to send her a text when I got home.  I just happen to have double stuffed baked potatoes ready to go for dinner, so this would be a great time to give it a try.  I was to send a text that said either two thumbs up or boo hiss.   I got the tortilla chips down to sample some before I “ruined” my gorgeous veggie filled baked potato.  I took one big bite.  I finished chewing.  I picked up my phone.  I sent the text………….”FOUR THUMBS UP”  I used all capital letters.  I was dancing a jig and smiling and Mr. Right enjoyed it as well.  Now, she bought the mild for me.  However, they sell a zesty that he wants to try.  OH MY GOODNESS.  This salsa has all sorts of veggies and olives and saucy goodness all tangled up in some type of wonderful , flavorful sauce and that sauce just happens to have a zing of vinegar.  Oh, they had me at vinegar.  I just fell in love with this amazing sauce.  I feel like I can have chips and dip like everyone else!!!!!!!!!!  Slap me with a wet noodle while bobbing up and down like a chicken who just found a batch of fresh picked blueberries!  Yes, that good.    Even though I have never had salsa that I have loved, I feel honored and privileged to have a life long friend who would think through the gift and share something that I may have never found.

I promise to share more of the goodness that was tucked inside that bag of surprises on another blog posting or two.

It feels so lovely to be bathed in the Grace of friends.  Friends who have your back.  Friends that will look for things that you can have and enjoy like everyone else.  We all want to fit in.  We are all (well I think everyone is) on the look out for healthy “junk” food we can dive into and lick the bowl clean.  We all enjoy the taste of really flavor packed goodness.  This is something that everyone would enjoy.  So if you are looking for the perfect Sassy Valentine gift , you might consider a jar of love.  She found it at a specialty shop.  They are a local couple here in Washington.  However, I just read where you will be able to find it at Safeway.  The gorgeous red color from the peppers and tomatoes will lure you in, the vinegar will tickle your fancy, the flavor will have you reaching for another chip to dip.

Like mother, like daughter.  I just happen to be the lucky girl who can call both of them my friends.
